The Alien 2022

The Alien 2022 is designed purely as a windsurf foilboard, the Alien allows all variables to work in harmony and go beyond just balancing on a foil to WINDSURFING on a foil. A functional foil board with refined details that makes foiling both accessible and desirable.

Development program

The Alien development program was started when the disappointment of bolting a hydrofoil to a normal windsurf board was realized. By analyzing and deeply understanding the new variables foiling introduced, we saw that specific foil-oriented equipment was needed to elevate the experience into a true windsurfing sensation; radiates in control and carving turns instead of balancing on top of them, trimming nervously.

The differences

The differences between The Alien 2022 and a normal freeride are big; shape, length, rocker, stance, pretty much everything. But this new geometry works in conjunction with the foil and rig to bring balance and a new windsurfing world to any competent windsurfer. It opens up more locations for windsurfing and can double or triple your days on the water. Stable enough for your first flights, the Alien has the thoughtful details to deliver performance not to get too big.

Alien technology

The Severne Alien foil freeride board comes in two different constructions;

  1. Custom precision technology – A performance oriented custom construction that prioritises high resolution shape accuracy, responsiveness, high weight consistency, and the use of high end materials.
  2. Moulded technology – A durable construction that makes use of traditional moulding techniques, and a faster lead time to prioritise cost efficiency.
FUNCTIONAL COMPACT VOLUME

The volume distribution is very important on a foil board because it can be used in much lighter wind than is necessary for water starting. So uphauling is an important consideration, and the Alien has enough volume forward to allow for traditional uphaul technique with one foot on either side of the mast base. Lots of volume in the back half of the board allows you to get into the straps before the board even moves and then launch onto the foil.

LENGTH

A shorter length reduces the leverage and lift the foil needs to get the board out of the water and keep it there. So the Alien is much shorter than normal freeride boards, but still has enough length to allow the nose area to be used for downforce at high speeds, balancing the lift of the foil. Having some length in the front also softens the return, minimizing catastrophic touch-downs. WIDTH The width of the board corresponds to the widths of the foils for which it was designed. Too wide and the board has too much leverage on the foil and it’s easy to overpower the foil or not have enough support. Too narrow and the foil may dictate where the board goes. So we balance it – Alien widths are 65-75cm wide and designed for films of similar width.

BALANCE
The board is only a single part of the foiling windsurfer and must work in harmony with other components; the foil and the harness.
The geometry of all 3 components (Foil, Board, Sail) work together to promote an upright posture. This requires only small movements for the rider to trim the ride – less effort and a quicker response to control increasing or decreasing lift.
Because everything works together, the balance of the flight is effortless.

MAST JOB
To achieve balance, the mast rail has been moved further aft to keep the rigging vertical instead of the traditional recline position. A vertical rig is more stable and positions the CoE of the sails directly above the lift of the front wing.

FOOT BANDS
The rider’s feet are on either side of the front wing and the tires are placed closer together for a more upright stance. This allows for smaller movements to maintain the foil trim and keeps the rider’s weight directly above the foil lift.

The foiling stance is turned more outwards towards the rail. Less load on the rig means the turning angles require more rigging plating, and to feel comfortable in this position the rear foot is clear of the rail and the front strap angle is reduced.

CONTOURS
SOIL GEOMETRY

The bottom shape on the Alien 2022 consists of 2 parts; forward half to manage touch-downs and back half to accelerate to takeoff speed.

  1. From the mast rail to the front, everything makes touch-downs as gentle and less violent as possible. Big chamfers, hidden rails, lots of nose lift. The wide angles on all edges make it very forgiving when the nose comes into contact with the water from any direction. This prevents the nose from snagging and tripping. And often simply sends the nose back into the air.
  2. From the mast track back, it’s all about taking off. Sharp rails, flat rocker, parallel outline. The bottom shape is flat for minimal drag. And has large cutouts to kick the tail down to angle the board for acceleration and take-off.
DECK GEOMETRY

The deck contours are designed so that the nose section can be used as a sail. To create downforce at higher speeds. The effect can be used to balance the increased lift of the film. By tilting the board towards the windward and presenting the nose area to the wind. The concave shape of the deck fills with wind and keeps the front down.

LIGHT IS RIGHT

When trying to get something to fly, light is right. Any extra weight requires more lift from the foil, so the absolute necessity of each element is carefully evaluated. The Alien is specifically designed for windsurfing and windsurf foils use Tuttle bases. So a single reinforced deep Tuttle box is fitted.

Flying above the chop eliminates most of the impact. So thinner deck pads enable weight savings.
Any learning experience involves a few mistakes, so added nose reinforcements help minimize damage. And new side patches are placed to handle the climbing onto the board when uphauling. With the reduced swing weight of the short board length, additions are easily balanced out.
Full PVC sandwich with carbon and S-glass skins make this a high performance product.
